HOW CAN I CHANGE MY ORGANIZATION’S CULTURE?

Business-Meeting-Delegation

Have you felt that you are on an uphill climb? The people in your organization are stuck in a rut. New energetic people do not stay. Your organization has a culture issue. It may have evolved over time, but you are not able to take the company where you want it to go. Changing culture takes a focused effort from leadership.

Attitudes drive culture. I love what Zig Ziglar said, “Your attitude determines your altitude.” But how do you change attitude? Some people, to your dismay, find their altitude suits them just fine.

Positive attitude and positive vision are the starting points. Yes, you must be upbeat, positive about the future, and set the example. Model the right behaviors and attitudes and find other “heroes” to model it too. This starts the change in direction and attitudes, behaviors then become ingrained in the organization. The organization must have positive vision and values, and leadership must live and promote those organization core values. But if there is a negative attitude at the top the culture of the organization is doomed.

All people won’t change but they will be left behind by those who are living the change and developing the new culture. And you need to select new team members for their enthusiasm and shared values. When they join and they see enough likeminded people they will be energized. This starts the ball rolling. It is your role to mentor them and keep them energized.

What will this do for your organization? You will attract employees and customers to the culture you have created. I can walk through an organization and know something about its culture. If your culture is one of collaboration and teamwork, for example, likeminded people will be attracted.

I have one specific organizational example and that is the networking organization BNI that is comprised of many chapters. Some are outstanding while others are struggling. I observe visitors who attend, and they tend to gravitate to those who show enthusiasm and desire to build relationships. The ones that are struggling need paradigm shifts in their culture. They are in a rut.

Attitudes

What about you as the leader? Is your heart in your business? If it is not, you might want to consider getting out and searching for what you really desire. On the other hand, if you really love, let’s say, real estate sales you should be focusing on the rewards. You will have obstacles, but you can plan for them and anticipate them. Changing your thought patterns and your outlook is about changing attitudes. Focus on the reward of more sales rather than the problems.

Stay focused on what you want and what can go right-- in short what you can become.

The culture of your company is in your hands. Create your dream culture.
